The Firebirds turn heads at the 2021 GMC Championships!
The Firebirds took to the track for the 2021 GMC Championship and did not disappoint. The scoring began with a season best time from the boys 4×800 of 7:53, good enough for 2nd in the conference. Team members include: Zach Beneteau, Cole Cronk, Sergio Negroe and Zach Plotkin. Annika Kinley continued her spectacular senior year with a 1st place finish in the High Jump and a 2nd place finish in the 400m. She bested the school record in the 400 and now takes possession of the 400 record with a time of 58.56. She wasn’t done yet, Annika also anchored the 3rd place finishing 4×200 and lead off the girls 4×400 which turned in a season best time. Girls 4×200 members: Jaylin Rao, Ayana Johnson, Kylie Dilley, Annika Kinley. Girls 4×400 members: Annika Kinley, Emily Doerman, Maddie Powers and Lauren Mang. Kylie Dilley had herself a day as well with a great 300H race coupled with the 4×100 and 4×200. Freshman phenoms Ayana Johnson and Jaylin Rao made their presence felt at the conference meet as they both had top notch performances and put the conference on notice for what is to come from the youthful Firebirds. Lauren Mang led the girls distance crew with an impressive performance in the 1600 and a strong leg of the 4×400. Grace Hicks continued her winning ways as she became the GMC pole vault champion. The 4×100 showed out as well turning in a season best time in the prelims and a solid showing in the finals. 4×100 members: Abby Stockmeier, Jaylin Rao, Kylie Dilley and Ayana Johnson. The good performances weren’t confined to the girls side.
All boys relays dropped season best times at the conference meet on there way to a 4th place finish overall. Boys 4×100: Bryan White, Kelvin Nkansah, John Edwards and Ben Minich. Boys 4×200: Ben Minich, Jyaire Brown, Alex Afari and Kelvin Nkansah. Boys 4×400: Malachi Irby, Si Walters, Ben Zimmerer and Kemen Norman. Ben Minich introduced himself to the GMC with 2 outstanding relay performances and a stellar run in the 200m. Alex Afari continued his climb in the high jump placing 4th with a leap of 6ft. Our Rookie pole vault crew of Jonah Dangel and Zach Herkins also made a splash scoring 4th and 6th finishes. The throwing tandem of Aneesh Vyas and Tegra Tshabola scored valuable points in the shot put. Cole Cronk won the 2 mile and etched his name in the GMC record books in the 3200. He was followed closely by Zach Beneteau who finished 2nd. Sergio Negroe ran a season best 1:59 in the 800m. Kaleb Martin dropped a 4:22 in the 1600 finishing 4th.
The Firebirds represented Lakota West admirably at the League meet. The young squad isn’t done yet as they head to Ross on Wednesday and Friday to compete at the District Meet. Top 4 placers in each event move on to Regionals next week. The future is bright for the running, jumping and throwing firebirds!!!
Congrats to Annika Kinley on her runner up finish in the 400m. She also sets a school record with a time of 58.56!!!

DYK-@ColemanCronk is the only Lakota West student-athlete to hold an @gmcsports Track and Field record. He won the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:21.95. The old record had stood for 8 years (previously held by Tom Clark of Mason). pic.twitter.com/5Rv8SqMb8x

Several PR’s last night, a meet record set, school records broken what else could a coach ask for? I’m very proud of our kids, especially the seniors. Can’t wait to get back after it next week at districts!
