Senior Kaelyn Mathis (’22), daughter of Kari and Mike Mathis, has verbally committed to play softball and plans to continue her education at James Madison University next school year.
What led you to your decision to attend your chosen college?
I determined Coach LaPorte was the right coach for me when I was in California for the PGF National Championship and she was there for every game from start to finish. When we lost the championship, she waited for me and gave me a hug after the game. During my visit, she made me comfortable and shared with me that she believed in me and that I could make an immediate impact to their program.
What other schools did you consider?
Boston College
Ohio State University
Miami University Oxford
College of Charleston

When did this school come into the picture?
Mid-July 2021
Have you visited the school? If so, when? How did it go?
I visited JMU the first weekend in August. It is in a beautiful area sitting between two national forests. They have amazing facilities and buildings. I was able to meet with two current team members at JMU as well as their trainer and was impressed with each conversation.
Did anyone help you through the recruiting process? What kind of help did they provide?
I prayed A LOT through this process. Leaning on my faith to get me through and maintain my patience was key. I discussed each prospect with my parents and especially my brother Brock who has already been through this process. His input was crucial. He made me think about things outside of game such as how you connect with the coach and how they greet you upon entering the campus. It lets you know how your time there will be moving forward.
What are your strengths?
Clutch hitting, game situation knowledge, time management
What do you think you need to improve before starting college?
I need to continue to work on my defensive skills and pitching to improve my speed.
